Nimble Machines is a venture of Ucam and specialises in the manufacture of sophisticated high-speed CNC gear hobbing machines.
They approached Lucid to not just design their new product, but create a design template that could be applied to all their other machines in the product line. Keen to take their product line to a world stage, the client wanted it developed in record time to be showcased at the Imtex machine tool exhibition 2023 in Bangalore and then at international events such as the EMO Hannover later in the year.
We began by examining the machine architecture of the Vajra 130, the product we sought to design from the ground up. A healthy dialogue between Nimble’s engineers and our design team saw us making many recommendations to improve the base architecture of the machine - a smaller footprint, optimised packaging and even some potential areas for cost optimisation.
Building on the agreed upon engineering model, we developed three distinct design directions. This allowed both the client and ourselves to refine the attributes that would define the way we wanted Nimble machines to be understood by a global audience.
As the design progressed we were able to define a standard for proportions, establish alignments across components, develop an innovative lighting scheme that visually alerts the operator, enable the control panel to tuck away discreetly when not in use, and allow ease of installation, operation and maintenance.
In a comprehensive guidelines and standards document we captured the entire design language and how it can be scaled to be applied to other products. And all in time for the product line to launch at Imtex with a tremendous response.
